South Beach Dive & Surf
South Beach Dive & Surf offers both diving instruction and surf classes in a convenient location at Miami Beach. Their private lessons are only held on request, with both individual and group sessions available. Along with the basics of how to surf, they also teach their students how to understand beach conditions, safety and a dash of history on the sport. Gear hire and purchase is also available.
SoBe Surf
Purportedly South Beach’s oldest continuously-operating surf school, SoBe pretty much taught everyone’s kids how to handle a board. They’ve been around since 2002. Their instructors are knowledgeable and professional, and cater to all skill levels from total novice to the seasoned surfer, with private classes available. Most of their students, however, tend to go for SoBe Surf’s standard classes. These classes run regularly and go for around an hour and a half. They usually start with basic ground training, where students can practice the basic technique before hitting the water.
SURF Miami Beach
This family-run business meets its students on the sand at Miami Beach, and offer custom classes for all skill levels. They do individual, family and group sessions, and have fantastic customer service.
Hirooka Surf and Sport
Hirooka Surf and Sport has classes for surfing, kiteboarding, paddle surfing, and stand-up paddle surfing. Their instructors are professional and experienced, though their gear hire seems a bit on the expensive side.
Viking Surf Camp
This surf camp style school specializes in teaching kids the basics of surfing. Their classes take place in numerous locations across Florida, offering students a good mix of conditions. For beginners, they have a six-hour superclass that’s guaranteed to have you standing up on the first day.
TKS Miami Sunset Harbor
Primarily a surf hire store, TKS also offers reasonably-priced surf and paddleboard classes. The store itself also happens to have one of Miami’s most extensive ranges of surf gear.
South Beach Surf Club
South Beach Surf Club offers a 2-hour introductory class that takes students from learning the basic technique on the sand to guiding them into their first wave. Instructor Chucky has over 10 years of experience, and classes are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. They also offer classes on paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo
The fair is in town! From March 14 to April 7, the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo will bring rides, live entertainment, and more family-friendly fun than you can poke a corn dog at. Standard admission is $10, or go for the $25 entry with unlimited rides. The Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo is the largest fair in Florida.
Miami Riverday Festival
Each year, the Miami River Commission puts on a celebration of Miami’s waterways. As one of Miami’s most important natural resources, the Miami River is more than just a river; it’s part of the city’s heritage and society. Celebrate the river and preservation efforts this year at the Miami Riverday Festival, which is set to take place on April 6 at the Lummus Park Historic District. Enjoy food, live entertainment and a ride down the river. Best of all, entry to the event is completely free!
South Beach Triathlon
Not for the faint of heart (or breath), the South Beach Triathlon will have competitors run, bike and swim their way to victory in this extreme test of endurance and sheer wherewithal. The race takes place in picturesque South Beach, where you can join crowds to watch the competition. Most importantly, all proceeds from the event will be donated to charity Save the Children, so you know your money is going to a good cause. The triathlon will take place on April 14.
Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run
If you’ve managed to catch your breath after the South Beach Triathlon, then test your endurance at the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run. The starting gun goes off on April 25 at Bayfront Park, where competitors will start this grueling 5km run. AIDS Walk MiamiWhy run when you can walk? For those of us who aren’t quite triathlon material, the 2019 AIDS Walk Miami offers us the opportunity to contribute to a good cause without breaking too much of a sweat. This 5km walk-a-thon is accessible to everyone, and proceeds will go towards the Care Resource and Food for Life Network. This organization provides critical assistance to the over 50,000 people in South Florida affected by HIV/AIDS.
Outshine Film Festival
Celebrate Miami’s LGBT community this April during the Outshine Film Festival. From April 18-28, over 65 films will be presented at various venues across the city.
SoFlo Cake & Candy Festival
Get your sugar hit this month at the SoFlo Cake & Candy Festival, which will take place over the last weekend of April (26-28) at the Miami Airport Convention Center. Tickets start at $25 for this extravaganza of sweet snacks, cakes, and other desserts. The event will be attended by both industry aficionados and local bakers alike, meaning there’s something for everyone at this celebration of sweetness.

Egg Safari at Zoo Miami
Is there anything kids like more than the zoo? What about a zoo packed with hidden Easter eggs? This Easter, Zoo Miami will be peppered with over 100,000 chocolate eggs for kids to hunt down. There will also be an array of different games and activities to keep the kids occupied, including watching the zoo animals themselves hunt for their own treats. Bunny Palooza at Miami Seaquarium
If anyone missed out on finding a chocolate egg or two at the zoo, then try your luck during Miami Seaquarium’s Bunny Palooza. Along with an Easter egg hunt, the Bunny Balooza will also include bouncy houses, a foam zone, and even a parade. Spring Eggstravaganza
On the Saturday before Easter, get a head-start on the egg hunting at North Shore Park during the Spring Eggstravaganza. Along with the egg hunt, there will also be carnival rides, arts, and crafts available in the park all day.
The Little Farm Egg Hunt
More chocolate eggs and adorable animals await you and your kids at The Little Farm, a functional hobby farm just south of Cutler Bay. Their egg hunt will have multiple iterations throughout the weekend, giving kids the best opportunity to find a few eggs. Kids will also enjoy a visit to the petting farm or a pony ride. Each month, a local artist is showcased by Katsuya, meaning there’s always something different here.
Atrio
Bars claiming to have the best views in Miami are a dime a dozen, but Atrio might really have the most jaw-dropping panorama in town. Aloof on the 25th floor of the Conrad Hotel, Atrio’s patio has commanding views of Biscayne Bay. Watch the boats come in over a cocktail or two, or head westward to the restaurant for the best sunset views.
Ball & Chain
A slice of history in the heart of Miami, Ball & Chain has somehow survived generation after generation of development and gentrification to remain as authentic as ever. Over the years, this place has seen names like Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday pass through its doors. Recently restored, the Ball & Chain ups the tropical vibe in its secret back garden.
The Wharf
Located on North River Dr, The Wharf has quickly become one of Miami’s most popular nightlife areas. This grassy area is host to an eclectic mix of food trucks, pop-ups and live entertainment. Things usually start to get good just before midnight on weekends, when the bands get going and the mojitos start flowing. It’s a great place to meet up with friends and hang out by the river.
Ted’s Hideaway
The antidote to pretentiousness, Ted’s Hideaway is a refuge for anyone and everyone who needs a break from Miami’s chronic ostentation. The beers are cheap, the music box tinny and everything permanently smells like cigarettes. It’s also probably the most welcoming, down-to-earth dive in South Beach.
Kill Your Idol
Speaking of dives, Kill Your Idol is dirt cheap fun. Every night has a unique theme, such as Monday drag night. In general there’s a strong retro vibe, so expect a lot of classic 80s rock to be playing. If you get bored, then let your eyes get lost looking over all the wacky stuff hanging from the walls.
Lagniappe
Is it your grandma’s house, or one of the best wine bars in Miami? Lagniappe certainly has a unique aesthetic that’s both quaint and charming, but don’t be deceived; this place means business. Along with boasting arguably the most impressive wine list in the state, they also do some excellent food. Plus, their jazz/bluegrass live entertainment is always fantastic.
Miami Shark Tours
As the name would suggest, this place is conveniently located in Miami, but also offers tours around Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and the Florida Keys. They specialize in cage dives and tend to do a pretty good job at picking out shark hot spots all over the Florida coastline. Another great thing about Miami Shark Tours is just how accommodating they are towards total novices; if you’ve never tried cage diving before, then Miami Shark Tours is a good pick. Calypso Dive Charters
Calypso Dive Charters mostly deals in snorkeling and scuba trips with sharks. Their dives usually run twice a day at Riviera Beach, where clear waters make for great visibility. This is also a particularly good spot to see hammerheads. Calypso’s tours also score big points for their small group sizes, which helps keep things from seeming crowded. South Beach Divers
Aimed squarely at serious divers, South Beach Divers has a great location and offers even better service. With a bit of a reputation around South Beach as the diving pros, these guys don’t mess around and organize expert-level custom trips. Along with sharks, they also do wreck dives. Unlike the previous options, Florida Shark Diving is based a little way out from Miami. Located in Jupiter, they offer tours in various locations throughout Florida. While they have a number of good package offers, they also do custom trips and are quite flexible in terms of diver needs. Shark Addicts
True to their name, the team at Shark Addicts really do seem hooked on sharks. Part preservation activists, part divers, Shark Addicts is all about respecting the animals you’re about to jump in the water with. Their four-hour snorkeling trips are some of the best in Florida though and bring you nose-to-nose with the sharks. Unlike others on this list though, Shark Addicts are a little cagey about you bringing along your own video camera /Go-Pro. They do, however, offer their own filming services. What to do in Little Havana
Puff some puros at El Credito Cigar Factory
As you might suspect, Little Havana has more than its fair share of cigar stores, each with their own unique character. While it’s hard to say which is best, everybody knows the oldest. El Credito is actually the oldest continuously-operating cigar factory anywhere in the United States and runs tours daily Monday through Friday. These tours are very much worthwhile and give you the opportunity to see cigars being hand-rolled by their experts. Afterward, sink into one of their lounge chairs and taste the flavors of Cuba with a cigar or two from the collection. El Credito is located at 1100 SW 8th Street.
Cool off at the Azucar Ice Cream Company
An icon of Little Havana, Azucar Ice Cream certainly doesn’t hold back on the sugary goodness. Located at 1503 Calle Ocho, this little place seems to feed half of Little Havana during summer. Don’t miss the mantecado, a classic Cuban flavor that combines cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Play dominoes in Maximo Gomez Park
What could be more relaxing than a game of dominoes? The answer: pretty much anything, assuming we’re talking about the high tension tournaments that go down in Little Havana’s Maximo Gomez Park. Known to locals simply as “Domino Park”, this leafy corner of Little Havana is always a hub of activity and the place to see and be seen for Cuban retirees with serious domino skills. Sit back and watch a game or two, or try your hand and be prepared to lose hard to the pros.
Dance at Casa Panza’s Flamenco Nights
Right in the heart of Little Havana, Casa Panza’s Flamenco Nights are easily among the highlights of a visit to Miami. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30pm, the guitars start strumming and the mojitos flow. Casa Panza is on Calle Ocho at 16th Avenue.
Location and how to get there
Little Havana is centered around SW 8th Street, which locals often refer to as “Calle Ocho”. Basically, everything along here between 12th and 17th Avenues is Little Havana, more or less. If you’re taking a private vehicle, then you’ll be glad to know Calle Ocho is lined with parking meters, and it’s somewhat easier to find a park here than in central Miami (just be sure to stock up on quarters).
If you’re relying on public transport, you likewise won’t have too many problems. From South Beach, take a southbound C-line from Washington Avenue to the Downtown Bus Terminal. From there, you can take the #207 to 15th Avenue. Then, just walk south towards Calle Ocho, and you’ll be right in the middle of the action within minutes. Alternatively, from central Miami, the #6 goes straight up Calle Ocho.

Carnaval Miami
Starting on March 2 and running through to the 10th, Carnaval is less of an event in and of itself, and more of a collection of related festivals in and around Little Havana. The first two events, Carnaval on the Mile and the Cork & Fork food festival, both kick off on March 2-3. Carnaval concludes with the iconic, and wildly popular Calle Ocho Music Festival on March 10. Miami Sailing Week
In one of Miami’s largest sporting events of the year, Miami Sailing Week will bring talent from across the world to Florida from March 4-10. More than 200 sailors will be participating this year, not to mention the thousands of visitors who crowd the coastline to see competitors outsmart, outmaneuver and out-sail their rivals. South Beach doesn’t have to be intimidating! Even if you’ve only got a weekend up your sleeve, you’ll have no trouble seeing and experiencing the best of what South Beach has to offer with our two-day guide.
Day 1: explore South Beach from end to end South Beach is fairly easy to explore for the most part on foot, with beautiful beach views and pleasant culture. Start your adventure at the northern end of the Miami Beach Boardwalk, and head south along the beachfront to Collins Park. This first stretch will take you along some of Miami’s most picturesque beaches, lined by upmarket resorts and bars.
Your first stop is The Bass, a historic art deco masterpiece that houses an eclectic mix of art exhibitions in Collins Park. Afterward, continue heading southbound to Soundscape Park, where the northern end of Lincoln Road Mall starts. This is the beating heart of Miami Beach, where you’ll find boutique fashion and a lively atmosphere. As you continue to head south, make sure to take a quick detour to Espanola Way for historic architecture. If you’re coming on a Sunday, don’t let yourself miss the morning farmers’ market. Also, don’t miss the nearby World Erotic Art Museum. Obviously not child-friendly, this museum is unarguably one of South Beach’s most memorable experiences.
Next, you’ll want to head towards Lummus Park and the Art Deco Historic District. On the way, sweet teeth should pay a visit to the Sugar Factory to stock up on novelty sweets. Meanwhile, the Art Deco district itself is another great area for people watching, or for lunch in one of the many al fresco restaurants that line the street. You might also want to continue your walk from the beachfront side of Lummus Park, and soak up the sun and stunning views. From here, the general idea is to continue walking down to South Pointe to finish the day on the beach. However, history buffs should make sure to stop by the Jewish Museum of Florida while en route. On your way, try to take note of the location of Mango’s Tropical Cafe, which you’ll be returning to later in the evening. Sooner or later though, you’ll end up around South Pointe. Make sure to set aside some time to visit South Pointe Park and take the mandatory selfie at the South Pointe Pier. Or, just kick back and whittle away the afternoon by enjoying the sunset from South Pointe. Either way, after dark party goers, should experience a slice of Miami’s nightlife, such as STORY Nightclub. Alternatively, double back to Mango’s for an authentic Miami experience.
Day 2: Take to the water On your second day in South Beach, you’ll probably find yourself itching to explore beyond the streets and hit the high seas. Miami has some of the world’s best diving, not to mention great opportunities for snorkeling and other water sports. South Beach Divers offers single day snorkeling trips and multi-day charters throughout the year, while Austin’s Dive Center has both gear and information for the avid aquatic adventurer.
Thai Food
Miami Beach boasts some of Florida’s best international cuisine, including a great lineup of Thai restaurants from hole in the wall noodle bars to cutting edge fusion. For a cheap eat, try somewhere like Sriracha House, Siam Palace or Ricky Thai. Meanwhile, Lung Yai Thai Tapas offers a more unique experience, while NaiYaRa’s range of appetizers makes it an excellent place for sharing plates.
Siam Palace Restaurant Siam Palace has been the go-to local standard for over two decades now, and despite a recent change in management remains as reliable as ever. Fast service, good quality, and generous serving sizes make this old favorite pretty hard to beat, especially in terms of value for money. As for what to try, there’s nothing particularly special on the menu beyond the typical Thai offerings. Do try the traditional Thai coffee though.
NaiYaRa This Japanese-Thai fusion does great sushi and even better red snapper. There’s a strong seafood focus here, and the glazed salmon is definitely worth a try. Or better yet, come during happy hour for their great cocktails and sides. Bear in mind though that outside happy hour, NaiYaRa is easily one of the pricier options on the list, so be prepared to fork out for a good meal here.
Sushi Siam Another Japanese-Thai fusion, Sushi Siam is at its best when it’s serving up one of its signature lobster dishes or that incredible spicy beef salad. Despite being a fusion, the Thai dishes certainly have an authentic taste, including packing the chili like they do in Thailand.
Lung Yai Thai Tapas What happens when you combine Spanish tapas-style dining with Thai food? Little Havana has the answer because of course, it does. Lung Yai Thai Tapas offers some of the best Thai food in town, served in an enjoyable tapas style. It’s a unique, slightly odd but overwhelmingly enjoyable experience.
Sriracha House This little hipster haunt might not look like much more than your average noodle stand, but Sriracha House really packs a punch where it counts. It’s cheap, fast, tasty and ridiculously filling. No wonder they do a roaring trade practically 24 hours a day, from lunches on-the-go to those late night noodle binges. It’s not quite fancy but does the job.
Ricky Thai Bistro Like Sriracha House, Ricky Thai Bistro is as unpretentious as it is welcoming. Don’t expect many surprises on the menu, which is about as stock-standard as the joyless furniture. Once the food arrives though, you’ll understand why locals rave about this place. Fresh ingredients and bold flavors make for a memorable experience at a reasonable price.

Wynwood Art Walk If it’s the second Saturday of the month, then you’d better head to the Wynwood Art Walk. Galleries stay open late with music and drinks, and there’s usually a relaxed atmosphere. Most importantly, it’s free!

Free movies and music at the New World Symphony The New World Symphony regularly makes use of its performance hall’s exterior walls to project classic films and contemporary symphonies. Matheson Hammock Park It’s hard to do better than a romantic evening walk at Matheson Hammock Park. This idyllic slice of natural beauty turns into nothing short of a tropical paradise during sunset. Maybe it’s the way the light cuts through the swaying palms, or the sound of the water lapping against the shore; whatever it is, there’s something magical about Matheson.
Under the MacArthur Causeway Here’s a local secret: on Watson Island, there’s a great little spot under the MacArthur Causeway with amazing views of the Miami skyline. Just take the Jungle Island exit and head down to the water, where you’ll find an area with stunning sunset views.
The Kampong This pleasant historic garden has one of Miami’s best collections of exotic plants, including more than 50 varieties of mango. It’s a great place to start or end a weekend date and is particularly lively on Sundays.
Institute of Contemporary Art If you’re groaning at the thought of trudging through some sterile art gallery, then you need to see the new Institute of Contemporary Art. This vibrant museum’s highlight is the 15,000-square-foot outdoor sculpture garden, which is well worth exploring on a sunny afternoon. Best of all, this is one of the few museums in the city that’s completely free to enter.
Bill Baggs State Park On weekends, Bill Baggs State Park is alive with families and day visitors, but during weekdays this place is almost completely empty. If there’s anything more romantic than a walk along a secluded beach, then maybe it’s the lighthouse at the far end of the park.

GroundUP Music Festival Now in its third year, GroundUP has already positioned itself as an event worth keeping an eye on. This year the festival’s headline is Snarky Puppy, who’ll be performing their yet-to-be-released next album for the first time. Gay8 Festival America’s largest Latinx LGBTQ celebration will take place in Little Havana’s Calle Ocho on February 17. Flamingo Park Flamingo Park is in the heart of South Beach. Construction of this 36.53-acre park dates back to 1950. In 2013, the newly designed football field was opened. The renovations to the field and track include renovation of the bleacher building, press box, concession stand and restrooms in compliance with ADA standards, installation of artificial turf and field drainage to accommodate for football and soccer games and an eight-lane running track surfaced with a material that is guaranteed to also withstand bikes and roller-blades. The Flamingo Park Tennis Center was also renovated in 2013 to include 17 tennis courts, new lighting, landscaping, irrigation, and drainage. In 2002, the newly renovated Flamingo Aquatic Center was re-opened and in 2005, the tot lot/playground was opened. Continued renovations are still to come as part of the capital improvements G.O. bond project.

The 22nd edition of the Brazilian Film Festival will be returning to Miami September 14 to 23. The festival will feature a collection of short and featured films that showcase the best of Brazilian cinema.
The Brazilian Film Festival is an exclusive Brazilian content film festival held outside of Brazil. For the past 22 years it has celebrated the culture, diversity, and artistic vision that is unique to Brazil. The past year has been extremely successful for Brazilian cinema with many different genres of film, each with their own artistic vision. From this extraordinary collection, eight have been selected for this festival’s competitive screenings.
This edition’s tribute will honor Calos Diegues, one of the world’s most prolific filmmakers. He was one of the founders of Cinema Novo and directed films that were essential to Brazilian cinematography. The festival will be showcasing some of his films at the special screenings in Fort Lauderdale. One of his most successful films, “Bye Bye Brasil,” will be the festival’s closing film.

When people first think of Miami, snorkeling is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, because Miami is boasts some of the best beaches, it is quite possible for find some exciting snorkeling destinations in the area.
The Half Moon
Although the Miami Beach area lacks coral reefs, there are some man-made ocean habitats that attract an abundance of marine life in the shallows near this busy tourist mecca. The Half Moon was a two-masted racing schooner that sank in 1930 off the shores of Key Biscayne. The ship remains in its watery grave, embedded in white sand in no more than 10 feet of water. The remains of the boat make a happy home for many reef fish, sponges, and coral. At high or low tide, the ship makes a popular diving and snorkeling spot for visitors to the Miami area looking to get their flippers wet.
Snorkel the Bar
Want to combine your passions for drinking and snorkeling? The Jose Cuervo Margarita Bar may be the most unusual snorkeling site in South Florida. The 10,000-pound concrete bar was made especially for a Jose Cuervo promotion and then donated to the artificial reef program in Miami. The bar was sunk during the “Sinko de Mayo Festival” in 2000 and remains just offshore in Miami Beach for divers and snorkelers to share with the barfly reef fish who now call it home. Head 150 yards southeast of the Second Street lifeguard station to find the bar.
Biscayne National Park
Biscayne National Park, which is just south of the city, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts that is a nice change of pace from the hectic city scene. This laid-back park has a shallow reef that is excellent for snorkeling and diving. The park’s underwater ecosystem is home to corals, reef fish, and manatees. Visitors may also see crocodiles sunning themselves and butterflies and birds fluttering through the air. Snorkeling is an excellent way to see the reef, and the water is shallow enough for those of all skill levels and ages. The park is open 24 hours a day all year, but check the weather before heading out, especially from June to November, which is hurricane season.
Crandon Park
Miami Dade Eco Adventures holds various tours around Key Biscayne and the Bear Cut Preserve from Crandon Park. The kayak and snorkel tour since it is an excellent way to get away from the shore and see the area’s marine life. Take a kayak tour of Bear Cut, then hop into the water with a mask, snorkel, and fins and see spotted eagle rays, sea stars and more. Tickets for this tour are available at the Crandon Park Visitor and Nature Center in Key Biscayne.

Casa Tua
Casa Tua, which translates to mean “Your House,” has carefully created an ambiance to make guests feel like they are in the comforts of an Italian home. The restaurant features an open kitchen, a communal table, an outdoor courtyard, and a welcoming dining room, which is decorated with nostalgic pictures and books. Of course, this Italian-inspired ambiance comes at a rather steep cost. Most appetizers (from tuna tartar to burrata) cost around $20 and their traditional Italian pasta dishes span from $22 to $28. Dining at Nobu may put a rather large dent in your bank account, but the fish is so fresh and innovatively prepared, that it is worth the hefty bill. Some of their standout dishes include their lobster shitake salad ($40), their yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno ($27), their tenderloin of beef ($46), and their king crab leg with wasabi glaze ($38). Time stands still here, and it’s easy to fall in love all over again in Surfside.
21st–45th Street Beach
Everyone can probably agree that while South Beach has its charm, but it’s not exactly the best spot for a romantic stroll. Instead, opt for the nearby stretch of beach running from 21st Street up to around 45. This area is much quieter, and a better pick for romance. During the day it can still get a bit noisy, but the late afternoon lull is pure bliss.
Another slice of idyllic innocence, Bill Braggs offers a wide beach overlooked by a historic lighthouse. Like Surfside, it feels like you’re a world away – even though it’s only just a short trip across the bridge to Key Biscayne. It’s just a stone’s throw away, and a great spot for a romantic Sunday afternoon outing.
South Pointe Park Pier
South Pointe was made for nurturing young love. This quiet point at the end of Miami Beach is a great spot for a romantic beach-side date. Grab a bag of crab claws from Joe’s Takeaway, and settle down in the picnic area for stunning views and a mellow vibe. Afterward, take a walk along the beach, or just sit back and watch the cruise ships come in.
Matheson Hammock Park Beach
An artificial atoll pool, Matheson Hammock has good looks and a chilled vibe, and the sunset is not to be missed. However, the real drawcard here are the perfectly still waters, completely free from the surf. The surface is like a mirror of water and offers effortless, lazy drifting. All you need are a few inflatables, the love of your life and a few hours to whittle away on the water.
Bal Harbor
Just north of Surfside, Bal Harbour is decadence to the extreme. Locals say there are more millionaires per capita here than anywhere else in the country – and that’s not particularly hard to believe. Not only that, but there’s a good reason Miami’s upper crust chose Bal Harbor to live. Turquoise waters and flawless white sand make for a backdrop that’s almost too picture perfect to be real. A bit of a local secret, Watson Island’s MacArthur Causeway is a rumbling morass of traffic for most of the day. However, unbeknownst to passersby, beneath the causeway, there’s a small area with views of the Miami skyline to die for. Come here at night to see the twinkling lights of the city from afar. If you get a clear night it’s even better.

It’d be remiss to mention romance in South Beach and not point to Juvia, one of Miami’s most impressive restaurants. On arrival, the first thing that will catch your eyes is the floor to ceiling windows, offering incredible views of the city below. This penthouse level restaurant overlooks South Beach, and if you time things just right you might catch a sunset to die for. Any date will be impressed, but that’s only the start! Juvia isn’t just good looks and serves up an intriguing combination of French, Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. Their king crab risotto is fit for a king, while those tasty little hamachi espumas make for some pretty spicy little entrees. Oh, and don’t forget the drinks! The specialty is the Juvia lemonade, a fruity mix of Beluga Noble Vodka, berry puree and lemon. Yum!
The brainchild of Michelin star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Matador Room will blow you away with its opulent Art Deco interior. It looks like the sort of place where you might have casually bumped into Frank Sinatra and settled down for a few quiet drinks. Try and get one of the upstairs club-style booths, which offer a bit of seclusion that’s perfect for lovers.
Despite Matador Room’s obvious retro overtones, the food itself is cutting edge contemporary Latin fare. Pretty much everything is made with locally-sourced Florida-grown ingredients. The menu might also nudge you towards shareable; indeed, much of the food here is intended to be passed around and enjoyed by the whole table. So if you’re territorial about your plate, then this place isn’t for you. For everyone else though, Matador Room offers an elegant yet unpretentious night out. Don’t leave without trying the Cuban-style arroz con pollo.
An outcrop of the exclusive Soho Beach House club, Cecconi’s is open to the public – and thank the Gods of good food for that. They deal primarily in sumptuous traditional-style pasta, made on site from scratch. There’s nothing like some homemade, fresh pasta, and Cecconi’s sure does deliver on this front. For ambiance, try to score one of the outdoor tables, ideally near the line of trees to the side. The lighting over there can be perfect in the evenings. As for the menu itself, don’t expect anything that strays too far from the tried and tested Italian classics. Having said that, the handmade spaghetti with Maine lobster is pretty unbeatable.
This Tuscan themed restaurant has some seriously intimate vibes. One look at the outdoor area overflowing with greenery, and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to Florence. Casa Tua serves up a classic menu packed with Mediterranean favorites, with a big focus on dessert. The vanilla and orange crème brûlée is the highlight of the night, not to mention the house special, their tiramisu. They also boast one of South Beach’s best wine collections; so if you want to show off your sommelier skills, now is the time.

For well over a decade now, Salsa Mia has been luring salseros in with their friendly vibes and fantastic live entertainment. Come for the nightly classes, and stay for the party afterward. This place gets really spicy on weekends, with some of the best Latino live music in town, punto. Plus, they do some decent drinks, and pretty good food, too.
Anyone worth their salt in the South Beach salsa crowd knows YUCA 501 like the back of their hands. YUCA, or Young Urban Cuban-Americans, sports a sprawling upstairs ballroom that serves as a stomping ground for the best of local talent. Their expertly managed classes on Wednesday and Friday nights are pretty much mandatory for anyone eager to break into salsa. Plus, the downstairs restaurant serves up some of the fanciest Cuban cuisines this side of Little Havana. Do yourself a favor, and try the paella with one of their famous tropical cocktails.
Wait – what’s American Social doing on a list of salsa clubs? In recent years, it feels like virtually everyone in Miami is trying to get in on the salsa craze, with many other clubs and restaurants putting on their own salsa nights. Just across the bridge from South Beach, American Social is one of the few such establishments to do salsa right. Their Wednesday salsa parties are seriously brilliant, with a great DJ and some ridiculously good drinks specials. Try one of their amazing mojitos, then hit the dance floor. They even have complimentary classes.
Back in the heart of South Beach, Salsa Central is primarily a Latin dance school. Their best known for their expert private and group classes, catering to everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. Oh, and did we mention they put on some of the hottest parties in South Beach? This is the place to be if you want to mingle with serious salseros.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, friendly salsa club, then South Beach Salsa Classes is for you. They primarily deal in salsa classes and mellow social events. It’s family-friendly, welcoming and perfect for anyone looking to sharpen their moves.
Another great spot for classes, Salsa Driven is first and foremost about providing salsa classes. They have a massive rapporteur, with instructors expert in everything from LA/NY style to Cuban Rueda and more. Driven really comes to life on Monday nights, though, when their workshops conclude with an all-out party, plus drinks specials. It’s great fun and a very welcoming community.
