Mixing traditional readings with innovative poetry-in-public-places projects, the festival weaves poetry into the fabric of the city’s existing infrastructure and cultural life. The festival runs through April and caters to all ages and creative differences by hosting special kinds of workshops, gatherings, and events. O, Miami begins its now infamous celebration of words at the Bayfront Park Metro Station on April 1, 2016, at 08:30 am with an original O, Miami project called “Flip the Script” created by local Miami Artist Rudi Goblen.
The event combines street-side “sign-flipping” advertising with contemporary dance and poetry. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets to Miami Beach’s Soundscape Park, just a few steps away from the San Juan Hotel, for a Friday night reading under the stars featuring the nation’s first Hispanic Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera.
“Poetry in the Park” begins at 07:00 pm on April 8, 2016. Not long after, enjoy a New World Symphony and Seraphic Fire performance featuring music by Steve Reich and poetry by Williams Carlos Williams at the New World Center on April 16, 2016. In the words of The New York Times, “If you are in Miami and you do not read, recite, or listen to a poem in April, something has gone seriously wrong.”
